Thelma (Geena Davis) and Louise (Susan Sarandon), two working-class friends who together have planned a weekend getaway from the men in their lives, start out having a great time.

But the pair eventually wind up at a bar where a tipsy Thelma ends up in the parking lot with a would-be rapist. Louise comes to the rescue but shoots the man dead, so they decide that they have no choice but to go on the run.

That one hickup in their holiday weekend leads them into a race across the highways of the Southwest where they find themselves sticking up grocery stores, resisting arrest, blowing things up and knocking things down. Just the day before they had been regular ol' Arkansas gals. Now they're wanted in several states and have never been happier.

The pair are pursued by a local Police Officer Harvey Keitel, sympathetic toward their plight, but the Feds aren't as compassionate and the chase takes them to the Grand Canyon where the women make a final and fateful decision about their lives.
