This film adaptation of Dan Brown's controversial bestseller picked up mixed critical reaction when it was released in 2006. Directed by Ron Howard and starring Tom Hanks and Audrey Tautou (pictured), some critics were especially savage, describing the film as dull, full of absurd plot twists, historically inaccurate and overly anti-Christian. And as the film opened, a number of protests were staged around the world, claiming that the movie was blasphemous, shaming both the Catholic church and Jesus Christ.

The public thought differently. A huge hit at box offices around the world, it became the second highest grossing film of 2006, prompting The Guardian's Mark Lawson to suggest that it was "critic-proof".

Now that the fuss has died down a tad, it's plain that the film is reasonably faithful to the novel, it's a bit dry, plods along, but does what it says on the tin. Frankly the absurd plot twists were already in the novel; later editions of the book have even been revised, so that both versions are pretty similar now. And as for the theological outcry, make your own mind up, but remember that no matter how much research took place and how much of it was based on fact, the story is pure fiction.

A highly respected curator of the Louvre is found shot dead among the paintings, naked, and surrounded by markings and messages that make little sense. Harvard professor Robert Langdon (Hanks) and cryptologist Sophie Neveu (Tautou) are called to the scene. The revelations they discover in the markings lead to a tense treasure trail across Europe, pursued by a sinister albino monk (Paul Bettany), in a race against time to uncover and protect an earth-shattering secret that has been hidden for centuries...
