Sonia Harowitz (Renée Zellweger) is a young woman who has married a devout Jew, Sender (Christopher Eccleston). Through this union she has also become a part of a closde Hasidic community.

Seemingly happy, Sonia doesn't feel entirely comfortable with the many rules and restrictions put on her by the religion and yearns for more independence - a subject closed by her husband due to his strong belief that women should be stay home and look after the children and household.

However trouble arises when she fights this decision and takes a job at a local jewellery store.

But this new found freedom leads her into conflict with her husband and into the arms of a young sculptor.
