Plainview, Texas is a typical American small town, until the Dennis gang from Kansas turn up. Robbing the bank, they kill the teller and, while making their getaway, the marshal, too. Storekeeper Jack Wright picks up the marshal's gun and, more by luck than skill, shoots one of the gang. As Wright is feted by the town and made marshal, gang leader Bob Dennis swears revenge. Will the townsfolk back Wright, his wife Martha and their son, or must he face the Dennis gang on his own? Alfred L Werker's film makes no apology for its debt to the 1952 classic High Noon, but MacMurray, as a mild storekeeper in contrast to Gary Cooper's experienced marshal, is superb as a scared man who nevertheless chooses to do the decent thing and stay and fight rather than run.
