Terrence Malick's Oscar-nominated epic is set during the WWII American invasion of the island of Guadalcanal against fierce Japanese resistance. His first film after a 20-year hiatus, he uses a cast comprised of star names and then largely unknowns to evoke the reality of the carnage, aided by the cinematography of Oscar-winner John Toll. Following an army rifle company led by Lt Col Hall, the cast also includes Sean Penn, Adrien Brody, Jim Caviezel, John Cusack, George Clooney and Woody Harrelson.
