Off-beat comedy-drama starring Jeff Bridges as an unreconstructed hippy who calls himself The Dude. When he is visited by gangsters mistaking him for a wealthy industrialist known as the Big Lebowski, the Dude seeks out his namesake and is soon embroiled in a complex scheme which he has no hope of understanding, let alone surviving. This quirky film from the idiosyncratic Coen brothers was a hit with the critics and features the first ever point-of-view shot from inside a bowling ball. It's that kind of movie.

Derided at the time, largely because it was produced by the then king of schlock Dino De Laurentiis, John Guillermin's remake of the 1933 classic actually has a lot going for it. The Oscar winning special effects sit happily with the tongue-in-cheek campiness that the three leads play along with and there's a superb John Barry score that is among the best of his long career.
