Bill Condon's film follows the adventures of The Dreamettes, an all-girl singing group. They're going nowhere fast, until they meet fast-talking car salesman-come-manager Curtis Taylor Jr, who has ambitions to make a fortune selling black music to a white audience. He persuades them to become backing singers for rising star James 'Thunder' Early but the larger-than-life lead singer Effie White must step out of the spotlight in favour of the more image-friendly Deena Jones. Loosely based on the rise of Motown and their stars, this lavish musical is filled with show-stopping songs, and Jennifer Hudson as the singer cheated out of her moment in the sun is outstanding.

Jamie Foxx plays Max, a cab driver in Los Angeles working nights who's offered $600 by Vincent (Tom Cruise), who's just arrived in the city, has a few errands to run and will then be leaving. Vincent asks Max to park in an alleyway by an apartment block while he goes inside. When the dead body hits Max's cab, he realises what Vincent's errands are - he's a contract killer in town to make five hits and Max is trapped as his driver. But as the body count rises, the authorities begin to take notice.
