Among the unpopular decisions Priest takes are to help a woman who keeps a house of ill repute, preventing the lynching of an innocent young black man and organising a decent funeral for a prostitute. But his position comes under threat when hotshot Yankee lawyer Horace Maydew stands against him for election.
