John Ford's Oscar-winning romantic comedy stars John Wayne as John Thornton, an Irish-American boxer who, after a professional tragedy, returns to Ireland to retire. There, he meets and falls for the fiery Mary Kate Danaher, much to the disgust of her brother Squire Will Danaher. Eventually Thornton breaks down her defences and the pair marry, but even then it takes the mother of all fistfights to convince her brother to accept the union.

John Ford's favourite film features the same character, Judge Priest, that appeared in his eponymous 1934 film. This time the role of the upright small town lawyer Judge William Priest is taken by Charles Winniger, who sticks up for the ordinary people of the town, much to the disgust of the rich mansion owners who still miss the days of the Confederacy. Among the unpopular decisions Priest takes are to help a woman who keeps a house of ill repute, preventing the lynching of an innocent young black man and organising a decent funeral for a prostitute. But his position comes under threat when hotshot Yankee lawyer Horace Maydew stands against him for election. The portrayal of the town's black community is decidedly uncomfortable even for when the film was made, let alone now but otherwise, it is a congenial comedy drama with few surprises when the result of the election is announced.
