Classic western about a man on a horse who comes to the aid of repressed farmers. Alan Ladd defies his own tiny physique to carve a mythic persona, the stranger on the white horse who stands for goodness and justice in the face of armed aggression and superior numbers. Jack Palance is the archetypal baddie in the black hat whose firepower blows little Elisha Cook Jr off his feet. This is one of the westerns which inspired a hundred imitators. It may build slowly, but it's a good'un.

John Ford directs John Wayne in this romantic comedy; their last film together. Wayne plays Michael Donovan who, with his ex-Navy pals Thomas Gilhooley and William Dedham, has ended up on a South Pacific island after the war. Donovan runs the bar, Gilhooley hangs out there and Dedham is the island doctor, married to one of the locals. But trouble threatens their paradise when Dedham's estranged daughter Amelia arrives with news that he's heir to the family's shipping company: but he could lose the inheritance to her if he's seen to be living in an "immoral" way. As Dedham is away on an emergency, Donovan convinces her that he's responsible for Dedham's children and, while he maintains the subterfuge, the beauty of the island and its way of life get under Amelia's skin, as do Donovan's romantic overtures.
