Buffy tells Giles the truth about Dawn and they decide to keep the secret about her origin. Meanwhile, Buffy moves back home to stay together with her sick mother and Dawn. On the eve of Tara's birthday, her big brother Donny, her father and her cousin visit to bring Tara back home, as they believe that she has a demon inside her that will be unleashed on her 20th birthday. Meanwhile, The Beast sends Lei-Ach demons to chase and kill Buffy, but Tara casts a spell on her friends that makes demons invisible, bringing trouble on them all.

Shadow. (Series 5, episode 8)
When Joyce goes to the hospital for a CAT scan, the doctor finds a shadow and she is immediately admitted to surgery. After the surgery, the doctor reveals that she has a low-grade brain tumour. Buffy wants to use magic to heal her mother, but Giles, Willow and Tara advise her that it would be too high a risk for a human. Meanwhile, Glory goes to the Magic Box, and the naive Giles sells two powerful components for an ancient spell that will conjure a snake demon to track The Key. When the snake demon finds Dawn in the Magic Box, Buffy and Giles follow the demon, to try and kill it before it gets back to Glory.

Joyce is nervous, and her anxiety is because she has a date with a man called Brian. Meanwhile, a strange and beautiful girl called April arrives in Sunnydale seeking her mysterious boyfriend Warren. Buffy and her friends are at a party where Spike is thrown through a window after attempting to flirt with April. The superstrong April then hits Buffy. The slayer and the Scooby gang soon realise that April is a robot searching for her creator. Meanwhile, Glory learns that Ben tried, unsuccessfully, to date Buffy.

Buffy organises her mother's funeral, and after the service she meets Angel, who has come to Sunnydale to support her. Meanwhile, Dawn becomes obsessed with bringing her mother back from the dead. She steals infamous witchcraft books from Willow and the Magic Box. Then, helped by Spike, they visit the demon Doc, an expert in black magic who teaches Dawn resurrection techniques. But before Dawn can do the spell, she and Spike must steal a Ghora demon egg from the Hell Mouth. But will it be Joyce that returns or something evil? Meanwhile, Ben unintentionally reveals to Jinx that The Key is an innocent in human form.

Giles persuades her that going on a vision quest in the desert will help. While on her quest, Buffy has a vision of the First Slayer, who tells her that death is her gift. Meanwhile, Spike gets the Buffy-robot from Warren and both the Scooby Gang and Glory's minions believe that the robot is the real Buffy. Later, Spike is captured and tortured by Glory's minions as they believe that he is The Key.
