Stanley Kubrick's first major studio film is set during World War I, drawing on the dramatic difference between the experiences of the men in the trenches and their commanding officers, who are comfortably billeted in their chateaux. After an attack by the French troops, led by Col Dax, fails, three men are selected to be shot for cowardice pour encourager les autres. An outraged Dax defends them at the court martial, to no avail, and despite evidence which should condemn a superior officer, the three are executed. Such was the dramatic strength of the film it was banned in France until 1975.
