Terrence Malick's elegiac portrayals of America's past and present, from Badlands to Days of Heaven, continues with this sweeping historical drama focusing on the early English settlers of Jamestown and their relationships with the Native Americans. Colin Farrell stars as Capt John Smith, a troublesome member of the settlers, who meets and falls in love with Pocahontas and brings the two civilisations together. But they become separated and she then encounters settler John Rolfe, with whom she finds happiness and, in her voyage to England with him, the beginnings of a rapport between the two nascent nations. Malick and his cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki evoke the initial idyll of the settlement, the later frictions and the London scenes with a natural feeling that complements the outstanding cast.
