I was really disappointed with Sir Trevor's "view" on Trinidad. It was cliched and really did not truly represent contemporary Trinidad life and culture. Even his version of Carnival was unimpressive. I felt this program did more harm than good to the image of this most interesting island.
Sir Trevor's documentary on Jamaica was very unfair.The programme should have been about the secrets . Why did he spend so much time highlighting the crime , visiting the Women's Prison , also , showing a weed seller ? Maybe I am a very thick bastard , but what was relevance of all this . The blue mountain bit was good . He could have shown more of the natural features of Jamaica . Check out YS Falls etc. If the programme was about crime , then fair enough . When he went to Barbados did he do this ? an emphatic NO . He showed the BEST of Barbados or Little England as it is affectionately called .
Why I am I complaining , it will always be the same . Its Jamaica , lets head to the ghetto and show some no teeth person telling you about hard times . Forget about affluent places.
I am a very sad about the way Sir Trevor went to down town Kingston ghettoo telling people in the whole world about my Jamaica, first thing what does he know about Jamaica? Jamaica has 14 parish Kingston is the capital what about the rest of Jamaica. to be fair i have been all over Jamaica and it is true , its is one of the most hated carribean islands in the carribean. All the islands ive been to have said they dislike jamaica very much and it makes all the islands look bad themselves. I started to watch the Secret Caribbean on Sunday 5th Juy but couldn't finish watching it especially when Trevor McDonald was in Jamaica. Like everybody else who commented on your programme you showed us what we already know. Why on earth did you not show the crime and violence in Trinidad, apparently that island is riddled with drugs and violence and have actually taken over from Jamaica in that respect. There is a lot of successful and affluent people in Jamaica but yet this was not shown. Seeing a programme like that will destroy tourism which is desparately needed on the Island. It look like say you want to see JA fall but this will never happen. Jamaicans were strong in the past and they still have that strength today. Show the people how far we have come considering what we went through in the past. You as a black caribbean should know better - dont put us down as a people and even if you did we are too strong for that. I hope you take heed to all the comments made below

What is it you are referring to as being true.dispite all the problems in jamaica which we not not denying exist, jamaican do enjoy a much better quality of life than alot of other caribbean countries including barbados and trinidad. the problems jamaicans and other caribbean nativers are having with his program is the biased way he did the jamaican piece compared to barbados and trinidad as if crime, violence drug pushers and poverty does not exist there. that is the big f...... problem about that has gotten me so upset. his program was named secrets of the caribbean what was in secret in what he did . nothing. i know alot of caribbean folks dont like us simply because they are jealous. most people in the world when you mention caribbean the only country they ask about is jamaica, reggae music and jerk chicken very body wants to be jamaican, walk jamaican, talk jamaican and look jamaican so tell would you be jealous of that.

Just watched the latest programme (12th july) and i am disgusted at the comment made by india hicks husband when asked what the devistation after a hurricane is like to his garden. He replied "just like a day at the somme" india chuckled at this comment. i found it offensive and I will try my best to get it aired in papers and television. Since when did he have 58,000 dead bodies in his garden. How pompus these people are! And Sir Trevor didn't question it! How disgusting!
On the one hand, I do realize that reporters in the UK always 'seem' to have a mission to destroy the image of Jamaica. When I heard about the documentary, I knew exactly what aspect of Jamaica would be shown, so I was not at all surprised or shocked.
On the other hand, Jamaicans 'mostly' have themselves to blame. The island has the highest murder rate in the Caribbean. It even has a higher murder rate than the whole of the UK. Jamaica is only a small country with less than a 3 million population. Yet it has a higher murder rate than a country of nearly 60 million.
In London, Jamaicans (including the majority who are not involved with any crime) have a reputation of being extremely quick to anger and hot tempered. Or just straight mad. Most Jamaicans argue that it's just a stereotype. But the stereotype is real and it comes from real people's daily experiences.
Any attempts to silence the reporting will lead Jamaica in the wrong direction.
As a Jamaican, I would love to see more positive aspects of Jamaica 'sold' to the world. However, the world is not 'stupid'. Jamaicans also live outside of Jamaica and create reputations regardless of TV reporting.
The truth is that the 'negative' stories sell. A reporter will have no credibility if he went to a 'peaceful' country with a murder rate of one per year and tried to 'invent' the country as violent and a 'blood zone'.
Negative reporters will target Jamaica because it has exactly what they are looking for.
Trevor should have spoken about crime in Trinidad as well.
In fact, I personally believe that he would simply refuse to talk much about the negative sides of HIS island. Including the racial tensions between his Island's African and Indian majority racial groups. Or some of the previous years extreme actions of the small minority of muslim extremists in his Island of Trinidad. Even his report on Cuba was totally positive.
He could have reported about the Jamaican golf scene. Nobody knows about it. Or Jamaicas rally scene. Or Jamaicas female rally driver Natasha Chang

In fact, there are thousands of different aspects of Jamaica that would be 'news' to most people. The series 'promised' to expose things about the Caribbean that were 'Secret' or not very well known to the outside world. Even though I believe reporters should not be censored when it comes to Jamaican crime, there are a lot of other things that could have been shown in addition.
Whatever his real motives, Jamaica STILL has a higher crime rate per capita and will therefore always attract more media attention for as long as the high poverty and especially the extremely high crime rate remains. It doesn't matter that the crime is mostly concentrated geographically into specific areas of Jamaica. The problem is that it is in the island and, compared to the small population size, it is very high. Even when you consider that the UK includes Northern Ireland, more Jamaicans always die each year in Jamaica from murder than the whole of the UKs annual murder rate.
Whats the big deal about this mans documentary. there is no lies or any make up stories in it. I born and grow in Jamaica and love the place to death. but we have major problems there and it cant be kept a secret much longer. i am living in the U.K for the past year and it always hurt mi when English people ask mi "why did you leave that tropical paradise" and i have to explain to them the inequalities and bias that happens in Jamaica, dem cant believe me. so i get an idea that most persons abroad have this idea that its all sand a beach and people walk round saying "yea man, Jamaica no problem". i tell them its 3 Jamaica and 3 sets of laws that govern it. The rich and there circles, The average Jamaican who try to live by the book and work like a slave to provide for them family and these are people that even have masters but they are not in the knowings and then the gangsta dem. i mean it happen every where corruption and all so if it a happen mi nu mind see it, and mi nu mind the world see it. What makes a man a man?Viewers should realise that you are or will never be genuine or truthful man for you are a news reader and you have to read or prepare what is alloted to you for you are living in an unreal world of lies and deceit and can never accept that you have bypassed your sellby date and should give up the chase.When you were knighted you should have refused for you are not up to that character of integrity and trust.You let yourself down by even trying to create a documentary that so much people know more than you do and not expessing or preparing the script properly will live to haunt you.What a shame!
Sir Trevor, You have dissapointed a lot of people like myself who have had nothing but the highest respect for you. You were the one black man on TV for so long who made us proud, who commanded respect and whose opinion is respected, however the bias portrayal of Jamaica presented in your programme is unforgiveable! Lets be real, Jamaica undoubtedly has its problems (which country doesnt?) but your journalistic integrity should have ensured that you presented a balanced view. Your series showcased some truly stunning sights from other caribbean islands for which you should be commended but it seems that you failed to notice that Jamaica is able to at least match many of those beautiful sights that you presented from those other islands and in many cases exceed them. Sir Trevor, your opinion counts and with your elevated position comes responsibility as potential tourists will undoubtedly act upon the views which you presented so I can only hope that you find some way to redress this imbalance and in so doing restore the respect of myself and very many others that you have taken so many years to earn.
p.s. Your series seemed to favour important high net worth white interviewees, well the good news is in Jamaica important high net worth individuals come in every shade including white!
I think this program was called the Secret Carribean. So why is it that sir trevor McDonald should have to go and stir the terrible part of jamaica. Jamaica is known to have lots of crime( one of my friends thinks everyone in Jamaica have a gun) so I guess the secret side would be the beautiful island and friendly people that's there.
Trinidad's carnival celebration is no secret to the world so i was looking to see another side but instead the program was only focused on carnival. Make up your mind Trevor, just continue hating on Jamaica like the rest of you small island people and stay the hell away from my lovely home. Don't hate us when you love our music so much.
