A poem for Grand National day for you called 'WAGS` -

    Horses' hooves strike so sure

their imperious faces alive to the ground's tricks

Eyes alert await the jockey's crack

    their routine voyage the bustling

    racing track

Beavering bookies rake in their haul

    cash registers spill

    exuberant spectators call

    Glamour girls grace the turf

    for elegant dresses

    delight the WAGS

    Grandstand finishes thrill

    corks and champagne spill

    as champion horses are toasted

and winnings not losses are noted.

At the risk of stirring up a hornet's nest, and finding myself in a minority of one, it is my firm belief that BOTH legs of the 'Autumn Double' - the Cambridgeshire and the Cesarewitch - should be run on the SAME DAY - with the Champion Stakes being moved forward to the first Saturday in October.

This would see the Champion being run the day before the Arc de Triomphe - and would stop those who greedily run their charges in both events, before expecting them to take in the Breeder's Cup meeting also.

How many times have the great horses from this side of the Atlantic run badly in the States - because they had run once too often.

The choice for connections would be ... is our horse a 10 furlongs or a 12 furlongs champion?

I value the opinion of Channel 4 racing's "brains trust".

    Regards,

    Andy Gerrard

I would have to say that I, and I know many others, were very disappointed that your coverage during the jump season included 4 all-weather flat races particularly during a week that there was a record Scoop 6 and three good jump meetings.

You must realize that the vast majority of punters would prefer to watch jump racing during the National Hunt season. All-weather flat coverage should only be provided when the weather is bad and jump meetings are cancelled.

    Regards

    Tony

I would like to know how William Hill gets away with the way they work,Icome from avery small village & today couldn,t believe what happend.I placed a bet on the 2.20 race at Ayr & backed the winner, the bet was placed by telephone,an hour later they took my winnings back out my account.Ithen noticed my winning horse had been disqulified, after WilliamHill paying out punters in their bookmakers shops how can they be allowed to do this to phone&online punters, even my local very small bookmakers payed first past the post,I think WilliamHill are the worst bookmakers on the planet&don,t care about their punters at all

What a great man Alistair Down is. He is more a poet than a journalist, and the way he displayed, when interviewing Henry Cecil,(Twice Over) his humanity only enhances my opinion of the man.
