Dave Lister is locked in stasis as punishment for smuggling a cat on board Red Dwarf.

While he's in stasis, a damaged drive plate releases radiation which kills the rest of the crew.

Three million years later, Dave is released from stasis by the ship's computer, Holly. He discovers that he's the last surviving member of the human race.

His only companions are a hologram of his least favourite crewmate, Arnold Rimmer, and the Cat, a life-form that has evolved from his cat.

The crew is joined in a later series by Kryten and by Kristine Kochanski (An old flame of Lister's).

fantastic :) am so happy back at last , i watched the new first episode thought was too many pauses between jokes and a bit more complex than the previous serious, also the actors seamed uncomfortable with each other, however the show is fabulous i am sure they wil all settle down with each other again and be just as funny a sthey first, the joke in the lift in new serious saying with cat saying he bought the virus on board emeber little fishy "how could we eve forget" ha,ha was not dwarf humour or how they would roll with the humour explainations, cat's jokes were always non related to plots and his OWN, i hope it rolls and rolls i will be still watching xxx loving you all forever a fan xxx whatever ! xxx
