Porridge' is slang for a jail sentence and habitual offender Norman Stanley Fletcher is doing five years of it. He whiles away the time sharing his wealth of experience with his fellow inmates, particularly naive, young first-timer Lennie, whom Fletch takes under his fatherly wing. A sewer trench needs digging near the prison and Fletch and Godber are on the party enlisted to work there. They look forward to their day out, fantasising about district nurses only to be slightly disappointed.
