An RAF officer, Flight Lieutenant Harrison, is sent to close an RAF base in a rural Scottish fishing village called Auchnacluchnie. On arrival at the base he is shocked to find just two remaining staff; one is the eccentric Wing-Commander Campbell-Stokes, and the other is his junior, Airman Trench. Despite the other 300 staff having left, neither men seem to realise that the cold war is over, so they continue to ward off the threat of nuclear attack.

Before Harrison gets the chance to file a report for the base to be closed, he meets and falls for the local pub landlord's beautiful daughter, Eilidh, who runs the village school. Eilidh pretends she looks after the children of the 300 base staff, so if Harrison closes the base, the school will also have to go. Instead he fakes the report to save Eilidh's job, but his plan backfires when he is sent to work at the base permanently.
