Something goes wrong during an attempt to improve the warp engines, severely injuring Trip and leaving Enterprise crippled in a dangerous polaric field. Phlox creates a simbiot of Trip, which will only live for 15 days and provide neural tissue needed for a vital transplant. The simbiot is named Sim and, ageing years in a matter of days, thinks of a plan to free Enterprise from the field. But the time comes for Sim to be used for Trip's transplant...
