Fringe (2008)

Production Year: 2008

Production Country: USA/Canada

A chilling sci-fi series, which thrills, terrifies and explores the blurring line between science fiction and reality ... giving a much-needed suckerpunch to the sci-fi genre. Enigmatic and eerie, the opening episode sows the seeds for a show that promises plenty of corkscrew twists and turns.

The writing team is certainly top-notch. It's the brainchild of Lost creator J.J. Abrams, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, who wrote Alias, Mission Impossible: III and the forthcoming Star Trek Movie.

The story begins as an international flight lands at Boston's Logan Airport. All the passengers and crew have met grisly deaths. FBI Special Agent Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) is called in to investigate. When the search leaves her partner on the verge of death, a desperate Olivia begins a frantic search for someone to help.

She's led to scientific researcher Dr Walter Bishop (John Noble), but there's a catch: he's been institutionalised for the last 20 years and the only way to question him requires calling on his estranged son, Peter (Joshua Jackson), for help.

Peter is less than receptive when it comes to his father, having inherited his genius and spent a lifetime rejecting it: "I don't want to be like my father or have anything to do with him." But Walter is vital to Olivia's investigation and therefore Peter is too.

"Peter's the reluctant hero," Roberto Orci told SciFi Now. "He doesn't want to be there, but he's going to be forced to become the parent to his own father." Somehow Olivia has to keep the family together. "It's her desire and drive that found Walter and Peter, and it is literally through her willpower that the three of them are together. So she is somewhat the authority and somewhat the mother."

Under Special Agent Phillip Broyles (Lance Reddick), the trio manage to work together to explore the fringes of science. They discover that what happened on that fatal flight is only a small piece of a larger, more shocking truth...
