Facing mounting debts, the two struggle to come up with a solution until Zack bumps into gay porn star Brandon St Randy (Justin Long) at a high school reunion. Realising how lucrative and socially acceptable the porn industry has become, Zack convinces Miri that making a blue movie together is the only way to escape their debts. Roping in a group of friends to help out, the two soon begin work on their first amateur skin flick, pledging that having sex will not affect their strictly platonic relationship. Shooting their first scenes, however, it soon becomes clear that there's more to their friendship than they're willing to admit. With Kevin Smith's comic creations Jay and Silent Bob nowhere in sight, this is the director's latest stab at leaving his View Askew universe behind, although fans needn't worry as there are plenty of his trademark cultural references and potty-mouthed gags to go around. As with Chasing Amy and Clerks II, Smith has managed to weave a heartfelt romance in among the filthy fun, investing this potentially sordid story with genuinely touching sentiment. Rogen and Banks make an endearingly charming couple and while the premise of the film sometimes stretches credulity, both actors manage to make it work, ensuring this enjoyably unorthodox love story has plenty of gut-bustlingly funny moments and a lot of heart.
