Thrice-wed Grady Tripp (Michael Douglas), is a college professor come writer who lives in Pittsburgh and is suffering from a severe case of writer's block. In fact he hasn't written anything since his award winning Great American Novel 7 years previously.

Not only is he struggling with this trauma he has also managed to get Sara Gaskell (Frances McDormand), the chancellor, pregnant. His wife is fed-up to the back teeth with him.

In the meantime, he and a college student, James Leer (Tobey Maguire) are trying to find a rare jacket once owned by Marilyn Monroe, and a college girl, Hannah Green (Katie Holmes) boarding with Grady has a bit of a crush on him.

It's hardly surprising, then, that his college's annual literary festival fills the former wonder boy with more than his usual quota of self-doubt and anxiety.

This festival weekend, however, proves even worse than he could have imagined as he finds himself reeling from one misadventure to another in the company of a new wonder boy, James Leer. He's Grady's most gifted writing student. He's also a fluent liar whose peculiar behaviour launches the professor on apicaresque odyssey of self-discovery.
