This gritty and effective crime thriller stars Joaquin Phoenix, Mark Wahlberg and Robert Duvall.

Club manager Bobby Green (Phoenix, pictured) lives the high-life with glamorous girlfriend Amada Juarez (Eva Mendes, pictured), running hotspot El Caribe for dodgy Russian businessman Vadim Nezhinski (Alex Veadov). Bobby has a dangerous secret: his estranged brother (Wahlberg) and father (Duvall) are narcotics cops, and Nezhinski is their number-one target. When the police investigation ends up in an all-out war between the drug dealers and the law, Bobby has to choose a side - a decision that could cost him Amada, and his life...

Directed by James Gray, Wahlberg and Phoenix inhabit their roles with convincing ease. Each new revelation and double-cross ratchets up the tension while the decaying decadence of late-1980s New York creates an atmosphere of near-constant menace.
