Keith Gordon's thriller opens in the early 70s and centres on the relationship between Fielding Pierce and Sarah Williams. He's a young coastguard with liberal political aspirations, she's an activist and their affair becomes strained as she becomes more involved in direct action. As the years go by, they remain friends and Fielding is close to being appointed to Congress when he hears that Sarah has been killed by a car bomb.
