Downtrodden diner waitress Jenna (Keri Russell, pictured) is trapped in a loveless marriage with boorish, controlling Earl (Jeremy Sisto), but finds release in her ever-inventive pie recipes. Even her I Hate My Husband Pie (bittersweet chocolate, drowned in caramel) can't help when she finds herself pregnant with Earl's baby. However falling for dishy new gynaecologist Dr Pomatter (Nathan Fillion) can. Could an out-of-state cookery competition provide Jenna with the confidence and cash to leave her no-good husband behind?

The release of this light-hearted indie comedy was tragically overshadowed by the murder of writer-director and actor Adrienne Shelly in November 2006. However, the film's winning mix of wry comedy, dramatic tension and sentiment mark it out as much more than a sad reminder of a lost talent. Strong performances and a refusal to follow expected resolutions create a satisfying, surprisingly optimistic movie treat.
