Randolph and Mortimer Duke (Ralph Bellamy and Don Ameche) of Duke and Duke Commodities Brokers are a pair of old crooks who dominate the Philadelphia Futures Exchange. After discussing whether a man is created by nature or nurture, they make a one dollar wager between themselves. One brother bets that he can turn a street hustler into a wealthy broker and turn a pompous, young suit onto the street.

There are some good situation jokes as Murphy plays up to the rich image expected of him. Murphy is confident and funny; he's got sharp togs, a jacuzzi and a butler, and he doesn't disappoint.

The storyline of the film (at least up to the gorilla part) is similar to that of Hoi Polloi, a Three Stooges film of 1935. Two rich guys argue about what matters most: breeding or upbringing. One bets the other they can take any bum off the street and make him a gentleman.

The story about the Dukes' cornering of the orange juice market may have been inspired by the market crash of 27 March 1980. The Hunt brothers from Texas tried to corner the silver market and subsequently failed to meet a $100 million liability.
