When their suicide mission to a Pacific island goes badly wrong, two reluctant World War II soldiers team up and become involved in a deadly battle of wits with an enemy officer. Director Robert Aldrich refused Cliff Robertson permission to attend the Oscars during filming and he missed his moment of glory when he won the Best Actor award for his part in Charly.
