Black comedy and anti-Nazi satire set in Warsaw in 1939, following the hilarious activities of a Polish theatre troupe, its narcissistic leading actor, his wife and her young admirer, as they attempt to resist the Nazi regime. Criticised for bad taste on its wartime release, the film is now regarded as a classic, and features Jack Benny's most effective film performance.
