In the first days of aviation history, the pilots were heroes, brave explorers who went up into the air in ramshackle crates, held together by wire and prayer. The movie, which carries an alternative title of How I Flew From London To Paris In 25 Hours 11 Minutes, is based around a prize offered by a London newspaper baron.

A host of contestants arrive in search of girls, fame and fortune. Among them are American Stuart Whitman, perfidious Brit Terry-Thomas, Frenchman Jean-Pierre Cassel and tip-top upright Englishman James Fox. The real stars, however, are the aircraft, a collection of awkward machines which, despite their crooked and crocked appearance, actually fly.

Trivia : The director, Ken Annakin, was one of the three men behind the camera on the set of gigantic war movie The Longest Day.
