Phil Agland makes his fictional feature film debut in this Film4-funded adaptation of Thomas Hardy's classic novel. Emily Woof plays the daughter of a sawmill owner who loves woodsman Giles Winterbourne but is pushed into a 'better' marriage to Dr. FitzPiers with tragic consequences. Together with the narrative, Agland's sumptuous cinematic evocation of Hardy's Wessex captures the eye in a way few directors can.
