Remake of the popular Owen Wister story in which a ranch foreman falls out with an old friend over a woman and is then involved in hunting him down when he turns to crime. The Virginian wins the battle for the affections of Molly Wood, and Steve responds to losing in love by aligning himself with a gang of cattle rustlers. The Virginian looks on while a posse catch Steve and hang him. Guilt-ridden, he swears to go after the gang-leader.
