Written by James Jones, Terrence MalickDirected by Terrence MalickProduction Year: 1998Rating: 15 CertificateProduction Country: Canada/USAFilmed in ColourTerrence Malick, director of the memorable 70s film Badlands, returned to Hollywood after a 20-year absence to direct this $52million film, based on James Jones's 1962 novel. The star-studded cast includes George Clooney, Woody Harrelson, Ben Chaplin, John Cusack, Sean Penn, Nick Nolte and John Travolta. It tells the World War II story of a bloody American victory over the Japanese in 1943 in the Pacific. At over two and a half hours long, this is an epic war film in every sense. C-Company, an American army unit, is taken to the island of Guadalcanal to regain it from the Japanese. The action centres on one hillside assault by C-Company, which if successful, will ensure that they control the island. The film focuses on the individual C-Company soldiers as they fight face-to-face with the enemy. The soldiers struggle to survive, whilst reflecting on the families and country they've left behind. Malick shot a staggering 100 million feet of film and spent ten months in post-production to 'find' the movie. Stunning camera work and shocking battle scenes combine with the soldiers' internal monologues to produce a challenging film telling many stories. Cast
