Joel McCrea plays a Union officer wounded in battle and left for dead. Rescued by a wagon train, he's nursed back to health and offers to guide the wagons west but the Confederates among the passengers ostracise him. He finds solace with Virginia Mayo and acceptance when he thwarts an ambush engineered by land baron Barry Kelly, his half brother.
