Maj-Britt Nilsson is a ballerina, recalling in later life an ill-fated summer romance on an island near Stockholm with the innocent Birger Malmsten only for a tragic accident to end their affair, compounded by the intimidatory presence of her uncle Georg Funkquist, whose presence returns again and again in her troubled life.
