Robert Siodmak's film noir stars George Sanders as Harry Quincy, the owner of a cloth mill in a small New Hampshire town. He also owns, through inheritance, the family mansion which he shares this with his sisters, Hester and Lettie. Things change when Deborah Brown, head designer at his chief buyers, arrives. The two start dating and get engaged but the possessive Lettie fakes illness to break them up. When Harry finds out what she has done, he puts poison in her evening cocoa but she is not the one who downs the fatal draught.
