The Sixth Sense (1999)Written by M. Night ShyamalanDirected by M. Night ShyamalanRunning Time: 107 minutes (approx)Production Year: 1999Rating: 15 CertificateProduction Country: USAFilmed in ColourThis film proves that every gift is not a blessing! Dr Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis) is a child psychologist who practises in Philadelphia. Crowe gets the challenge of his life (quite literally) when he becomes Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment) therapist. The eight year old boy has a very dark secret, but is too frightened to share his secret, Malcolm's job is to try and gain the boys trust and get him to open up. The renowned therapist becomes the boy's confidant and uncovers the source of his paranormal torments, but not before a very in-depth, fascinating view of both characters. Malcolm discovers that Cole is terrorised by supernatural apparitions, from those with unresolved problems who appear from the shadows. Dr Crowe tries to uncover the ominous truth about Cole's supernatural abilities; the consequence for client and therapist is a jolt that awakens them both to something harrowing and unexplainable. Cole is too young to understand his purpose, or to explain to others about the ghosts that come to torment him. The relationship between Cole and his mother adds interest to the film, as they represent a weird bond between mother and son, although there is love between them, Cole's secret builds a wedge that not even a mother could over come. Cole also has abrasions on his body, which cause the audience to suspect his mother, adding to the plot. The scenes in the house represent the two as strangers in different worlds that can not communicate. This is not helped when fear takes over Cole, when Cole sees the visions of dead people coming towards him and his mother can not, she does doubt him, and can not understand his behaviour, and impart can not cope. This chilling psychological thriller received six Oscar Nominations; for best picture, best Performance by an actor in a supporting role: Haley Joel Osment, best Performance by an actress in a supporting role: Toni Collette, best director, best film editing, and best Screenplay written directly for the screen.
