A troubled man talks to his suicidal sister's psychologist about their family history and falls in love with her in the process.

Tom Wingo (Nick Nolte) is a very unhappy man. He's not pleased with the way his life his heading, his wife doesn't understand him and he also doesn't get along with his dominant mother.

Now his sister, Savannah (Melinda Dillon) has attempted suicide and her psychologist, Susan Lowenstein (Barbra Streisand), has confronted him, wanting to consult him on her problems.

Now she patiently and cautiously starts to uncovers the terrible secret hidden in Tom and Savannah's past that is now affecting their present lives - years down the line.

On the other side she's unhappy too and the two both help each other to find their way back to life.
