The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946)Written by James M. Cain, Harry RuskinDirected by Tay GarnettRunning Time: 110 minutes (approx)Production Year: 1946Rating: PG CertificateProduction Country: USAFilmed in Black and WhiteDespite two earlier film versions and the well-known and raunchy 1981 remake with Jack Nicholson and Jessica Lange, this 1946 film noir is still considered superior. The definitive interpretation of James M Cain's novel, much of its power comes from the on-screen sexual chemistry between its stars Lana Turner and John Garfield (pictured). Nick Smith (Cecil Kellaway) is a middle-aged proprietor of a roadside restaurant. When he hires drifter Frank Chambers (Garfield) as a handyman, it is the worst mistake he could make. Soon Frank begins to have an affair with Nick's beautiful wife Cora (Turner). As the relationship progresses, Cora realises she only wants to be with Frank, so she talks him into helping her kill her husband, by "accident". But naturally the best laid plans never run smoothly... Highly recommended. Click to see when The Postman Always Rings Twice is coming up on TV. Cast
