David Lean's film, showing here in a restored version, stars Ann Todd as Mary Justin, married companionably but not passionately to banker Howard Justin. On holiday in Switzerland, she finds her room adjoins that of Steven Stratton, her first lover whose heart she broke. The reunion revives their affair but when Mary's husband finds out, he instigates divorce proceedings, precipitating a scandal that will drive her to the brink of madness and test Stratton's true feelings for her.
