Angela Bennett (Sandra Bullock) is a reclusive software tester whose life is suddenly threatened after she discovers a conspiracy that allows crooks to gain access to , and manipulate, top secret government data held on government computers through the security, anti-hacking software programme, 'The Gatekeeper' which has been developed by these crooks.

Soon her life is turned upside down as she tries to get someone to believe that she really is who she says she as as the hackers have changed her identity and created a rather colourful criminal record which makes her a wanted criminal in most state.
