The Mission (1986)
Written by Robert BoltDirected by Roland JofféRunning Time: 125 minutes (approx)Production Year: 1986Rating: PG CertificateFilmed in ColourIt is the mid 18th century and Father Gabriel (Jeremy Irons) is a Spanish Jesuit who has ascended the mountains of Brazil to bring christianity to the natives of the South American wilderness by setting up a mission there and saving the endangered Indian tribe. He is successful in his challenge and brings about a golden age among the natives through the introduction of christianity. When a slaver, called Mendoza (Robert De Niro), murders his brother in a terrible fit of rage, only Father Gabriel's spiritual guidance can prevent Mendoza's suicide and subsequent depression. To aid the troubled mind of Mendoza Gabriel brings him to work with him at his mission and with the other natives, and Mendoza finds the peace he has been a long time looking for and asks to become a priest alongside Gabriel. However all is not to stay as it is when the church, who is under great pressure, surrenders the mission's land to the Portuguese and thus allowing the return of the slavers again. Mendoza must now try and stop this ominous fate and breaks his vows and organizes the natives to resist the Portugese, but Gabriel tries to tell him to help them by all means, but, as a priest, not a leader of a militia. This is a truly magnificent film with the most incredible scenery I had seen in a long time and the script and cinematography are unsurpassable. Cast
