A movie is a characteristically penetrating melodrama that focuses on the life of a young German woman, called Maria Braun (Hanna Schygulla) and her marriage to a soldier after tying the knot during the waning days of WWII.

The German couple whose marriage is inaugurated with an air raid, which coincides ominously with their wedding in 1943.

The war sees the two participants splintering off in different directions - he is sent to a fate worse than death on the Russian front, while she rides out the war and amasses a fortune.

Director, Fassbinder has tried to show the gritty life after the end of WWII and the turmoil of the people trapped in its wake in this award-winning film which is shown in German with English subtitles.
