Gary Merrill plays police captain John Danforth, who has just passed his bar exams and is about to leave the force when he's asked to take on one last assignment, the toughest of his career. The Heights district is almost lawless, with a demoralised force fighting a tide of crime. Danforth soon realises the enormity of his task when a murder investigation sees him obstructed by both sides, but he cracks the case and whips his men into shape in Joseph M Newman's tough crime thriller.
