Valentina Cortese plays Victoria Kopwelska, a survivor of the Nazi death camps. While incarcerated, she befriended a fellow prisoner with family in America who promises the pair will go there when freed. But on the eve of Liberation, she dies, allowing Victoria to adopt her identity and travel to America.
