This Western is an intimate story of the enduring bond of friendship between two hard-living men, set against the sweeping backdrop of the American West, post-World War II, in its twilight.

Pete Calder (Billy Crudup) and Big Boy Matson (Woody Harrelson) have been friends since before the war and are masters of the prairie.

After the war they have to return to their previous way of life, farming the land and raising their cattle on the American prairie's.

However their love lives are not so easy to resume when on their return they discover their former pre-War sweethearts are marrying other men.
