Jean Renoir's sumptuous film stars Anna Magnani as a commedia del arte performer whose troupe are touring Peru and whose beauty sees her courted by diplomat Duncan Lamont, toreador Riccardo Rioli among others. But as the threat of war looms, she soon finds she must make painful decisions about her future.
