The Full Monty (1997)Written by Simon BeaufoyDirected by Peter CattaneoProduction Year: 1997Rating: 15 CertificateProduction Country: UKFilmed in ColourThis 1997 film was an unlikely worldwide smash hit about a group of unemployed Sheffield men who turn to stripping to make ends meet - and it's also one of the best and funniest British films in decades. Gaz (Robert Carlisle), is the enterprising leader of a group of former steel workers who, in the urgent need for some cash, he hatches a plan to launch a striptease act in order to earn himself and his out-of-luck pals some much-needed money. His pals consist of his best friend David (Mark Addy), an overweight, impotent ordinary nice guy, the uptight Gerald (Tom Wilkinson) who is the ex-foreman and amateur ball room dancer, Horse (Paul Barber), the old guy who can only dance the likes of the funky chicken and Guy (Hugo Speer), who is generously endowed but completely lacking in the rhythm department. Gaz realises that his group must offer something the Chippendales do not in order to draw the crowds. In order to do this Gaz promises that punters that his crew won't stop at removing their underwear - they will go the whole way, The Full Monty! Much to the dismay of the troupe itself. This film paints a vivid and hopeful picture of life in a town where pride is a luxury the jobless can't afford. Excellent stuff!!! When is The Full Monty next on TV?
