However when he walks into his house one day he finds a one-armed intruder there, who has murdered his wife, Helen (Sela Ward). However, the police fail to find any evidence to suggest this intruder ever existed which results in Kimble being arrested and charged with the murder of his own wife, despite his insistence that he did not commit the heinous crime. In court, the jury unfortunately follow the same beleif as the police and convict the innocent doctor and sentence him to the death penalty. On his way to the prison on the prison bus, his chance arrives! When an accident, involving the prison bus sets him free, Kimble finds himself on the run from the authorities. Now he must use his wits to stay liberated and find out who the murderer asctually was, so as to lift his conviction.He is relentlessly pursued by Samuel Gerard (Tommy Lee Jones), a U.S. Marshal, and is forced to keep out of contact from any friends or relatives due to their indiscretion. However, his determination and ingenuity soon produce results and he comes to the frightening realisation that he can trust no one.
