Incisive comedy set at the time of the infamous McCarthy witch-hunt and centring on a bookmaker who rents his name to blacklisted writers. The script was penned by Walter Bernstein, who was himself blacklisted, and several of the actors in the film were also the victims of blacklisting in real life.
