The Flintstones (1994)
Written by Tom S. Parker, Jim JenneweinDirected by Brian LevantRunning Time: 80 minutes (approx)Production Year: 1994Rating: U CertificateFilmed in ColourWhen corpulent caveman Fred Flintstone (John Goodman) lends neighbours Barney (Rick Moranis) and Betty (Rosie O'Donnell) Rubble money to adopt a child, best bud Barney is determined to pay him back. A promotion comes up for grabs at work so, in return, Barney decides to swap his application test with that of his not-so-sharp friend. Fred is delighted when he lands the fancy new job at Slate and Co, not realising that the boss just wants a fall guy to frame for an embezzlement scam. The plan backfires for Barney too when Fred's terrible test scores get him the sack. This exuberant, live-action adaptation of the Hanna-Barbera cartoons packs in tons of larger-than-life fun. Goodman and Moranis are perfectly cast as prehistoric pals Fred and Barney, while Halle Berry sizzles as sexy secretary Sharon Stone. Elizabeth Taylor and The B52s also appear in Levant's multicoloured Bedrock which provides a suitably vibrant backdrop for the Stone Age families' madcap antics. With Steven Spielberg among its producers, The Flintstones was a box office hit, paving the way for the 2000 prequel The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas. When is The Flintstones next on TV?
